You’ve booked the flight to SJO and found a stay near Dominical. Leave time for the part in between: getting through arrivals, collecting your bags and heading south without rushing the whole day.
The right option depends on when you land, how much luggage you have, who you’re traveling with, and whether you want a car during your stay.
Start with the whole journey. Immigration, baggage collection, rental pickup, transfer connections, and the final road to your accommodation all belong in the plan.
Driving: flexibility during the trip
The coastal route typically uses Route 27 and Route 34 toward Jacó, Quepos, and Dominical. It makes sense if your itinerary includes exploring the coast or visiting places that are difficult to reach on foot.
The inland alternative travels through the mountains toward San Isidro de El General, then toward Dominical on Route 243. Choose it because it fits an inland itinerary and the current conditions, rather than assuming a shorter-looking route will be easier.
Check the route on the day, ask your host about the final access road, and allow room for delays. The highway journey and the last climb to a hillside rental are different questions. Some properties require a 4×4 even when the main route does not.
For an unfamiliar drive, arriving with daylight left gives you more room to settle in. If your flight lands late, an airport-area overnight can be a useful part of the trip rather than a wasted night.
Shared shuttle: useful when you don’t want to drive
A shared shuttle can work well for solo travelers and couples who plan to stay in a walkable area. Easy Ride Costa Rica is Flow’s trusted independent recommendation for transfers and shuttles. It currently advertises SJO-to-Dominical service, with specified meeting and drop-off points and a journey estimate of about four hours. Confirm the details for your date directly.
Do not choose a departure just after your plane’s scheduled landing. Ask how much arrival buffer the operator requires and what happens if the international flight is delayed.
Also check where you will be dropped off. “Dominical” may mean a town meeting point or selected hotels, rather than your accommodation’s front door. If you’re staying in Dominicalito or on a hillside, arrange that final transfer before you arrive.
Private transfer: compare the cost for your whole group
A private vehicle may suit families, groups, or travelers with awkward arrival times. When comparing prices, look at the total group cost rather than comparing a per-person shared fare with a full-vehicle private quote.
Confirm the passenger count, luggage and surfboards, pickup location, waiting policy, and destination access. If you’re traveling with a child, arrange an appropriate child seat in advance rather than assuming one will be available.
Private does not automatically mean unlimited stops. Agree on any meal stop or detour before booking.
Flying to Quepos: a shorter flight, another connection
SANSA advertises direct San José–Quepos flights with an approximate flying time of 30 minutes. Quepos is not Dominical, so you still need a road transfer south.
Compare the complete airport-to-accommodation journey, not just the flight time. You will need time to finish international arrivals and complete domestic check-in, plus the transfer after landing.
Traveling light makes this option easier to compare. SANSA’s current policy allows one small personal item up to 4.5 kg, measuring no more than 50 × 30 × 20 cm. Checked allowance depends on your fare, and excess or oversized items are subject to aircraft limits. A separate carry-on and personal bag from your international flight may need repacking. Check the current baggage policy before buying the connection.
For a trip built around several surf sessions, renting a suitable board locally may simplify travel. Ask about available equipment before deciding to leave your own board at home.

Leave room for the journey
If you’re driving the coast, Jacó or Quepos can provide a meal stop. An outing in Manuel Antonio takes more planning than a quick roadside break, so give it its own time rather than squeezing it between airport pickup and check-in.
For an airport overnight, check the hotel’s actual location and transfer arrangements. A San José city address and an airport-area hotel are not interchangeable.
